Unless this team was going to be fighting for the East crown, there is absolutely no reason to have either prospect up before they can become a Super Two. And I'll be happy to see you eat your words when at least one of them is playing in the ML before June.

I think the tone of this blog post misses the point. The truth is that D'Arnaud missed most of last year due to injury and Wheeler wasn't spectacular in his AAA debut. Neither will start the team on opening day and neither should, but if D'Arnaud hits, I see him coming up early enough to qualify for Super 2. The Mets did it with Davis while preserving an extra year of free agency and it may make sense to do the same with D'Arnaud.

Wheeler could probably use another 10 to 15 starts in AAA to tighten up his control and consistency. He had a K/BB ratio under 2 during his first go-around at AAA and averaged less than 5 1/3 innings per start. It would be much better for him to be on a similar timetable to Harvey.

It's a bad argument to say that it's totally about the money since it isn't. It's about a combination of money, player development, and free agency years. It's one thing to give a guy one more year of arbitration but it's obvious why you would want another year of control for a guy, especially for a team that is at least a season away on the win curve from "going for it".
