Shocker: Chris Capuano Blows Game in 6th
Some people like predictability; they find it comforting. Such people must love watching Chris Capuano’s starts — they know he will blow the game, and they know exactly when he will do it. Capuano was up to his usual tricks on Sunday in Phoenix.
With the score tied at three in the — you guessed it — sixth inning, Capuano served up a run-scoring double to former Met Henry Blanco, and the Mets went on to lose their fifth straight game, 5-3.
Lucas Duda provided most of the scoring for the Mets with a solo home run in the fourth to plate the first run of the game, and an RBI single in the fifth to give the Mets a 3-2 lead. However Justin Upton answered right back in the bottom of the fifth, crushing a Capuano pitch for a solo shot of his own to tie the game at three.
The Mets had a golden opportunity to tie the score in the seventh, but David Wright struck out with a runner on third and one out, and following a Duda walk, Bay struck out as well.
Ryota Igarashi sealed the loss by allowing a run in the eighth — it’s time to just release this stiff.
As for Capuano, MetsBlog reports that he has cleared waivers and can be dealt to any team. The Mets should dump him as well. Or if they are going to keep him, take him out of the game after five innings regardless of how well he is pitching, because history has shown that he will indeed lose it in the sixth. It is absolutely ridiculous, but so is allowing Capuano to take the mound in the sixth.
it is ridiculous, but it’s actually an anomaly. i feel like this predictable fall out from him means that he needs another pitch in his repetoire. If someone can get through half the game just fine then all of a sudden can’t get people out, it means he’s probably a reliever. but with capuano’s stamina (or perhaps maybe it’s a lack of stamina and he can only go for 5 innings at a time), he might just need an extra pitch to keep hitters off balance
