Video: Roger McDowell, Starting Pitcher?!

Check out this unnecessarily long open to NBC’s Game of the Week from May 4, 1985, featuring the Mets vs. the Reds from lovely Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati. The interesting this about this is that Bob Costas tells us that “youngster Roger McDowell” will get the start for the Mets. Huh? It turns out McDowell started two games in his career, both during his rookie year in 1985. This was the last one, likely because he gave up six runs in five innings as the Mets lost 14-2. He found much more success out of the bullpen.
