If we trade for B. Phillips which he will make 6.75 mil in 2010 that would only be $750,000 more than castillo plus Phillips hits 15-25hrs and can get you 80-100 rbi’s and 20-30 sb’s. Then we can save money by signing J. Bay. He wants less yrs and less money than M. Holliday which can save us for starting pitching and a stronger bullpen. R. Halladay may be a great pitcher but I feel he is not worth all our draft picks. We must learn from past mistakes. If Omar can make a deal like he did with Santana then great otherwise lets go for 2nd tier sp’s and strenthen our bullpen. I would go after J. Pinero and R. Wolf. I would even try and grab Noah Lowry from san fran and give him a shot at the #5 slot. Remember he won 14 games in 2008 and he is only 25 yrs. old. As for the bullpen why not go after M. Gonzalez from Atlanta and J. Duchscherer from Oakland. They both performed well in 2009 and would definitely strengthen our bullpen for 2010.

Blogger,

Great site.
I think the #1 worst Minaya move was Xavier Nady to the Pirates. I remember being so angry when the deal was announced. What I couldn't understand was, how could they trade an everyday - good, solid, hitter and fielder - for of all things, a middle reliever?
The trade just reeked of panic and desperation. What still rankles me is that they are still searching for an every day outfielder and this horrible trade has hurt them since they made it.
I have to think that Nady would have won them a few games over the course of the last three years (in particular during the collapses of 07 and 08). Based on my thinking one would have to figure that the Mets would have avoided at least the collapse of 07 and made the playoffs!
AND AS YOU POINTED OUT NO OLLIE PEREZ!!!!

I am 50 years old and am a lifelong Mets fan. I have never hated a player as much as I despise Perez.. AND that includes opposition players.....

Keep up the good work.

Losing Jesus Flores, their best catcher in the minors, in the Rule 5 draft, when both of their starting catchers´ contracts were up in 1 or 2 years. Flores isn´t Johnny Bench, but the Mets have been looking for catching stability ever since. And I think that Julio Franco was being protected on the 40-man roster that winter, along with other bits of dreck.

I agree some of this was on, I'd like to think some changes might be in order...I don't know where one gets off saying 'Bert didn't want to pitch here. The year before (2005) he had an undeniably great year. Oliver Perez, for as bad as his current deal is, used to not be completely terrible. Obviously, now he is, and I think I agree that's Omar's worst move. Though it's hard to argue against that trade in '06. Let's not put the X-Man in the Hall of Fame.

Schoenwies, if i remember correctly had a good year before he came over. I think that's a second-guess. Maybe the money you could argue, but not the notion to go out and get him.

What I remember from Alou's scenario is that according to how much money the Team was spending (Maine and Oliver were bargains) it made sense to cross your fingers and pick up the option, just because he was hitting.

Bannister, the Marlins deal, and Oliver's new deal are clearly the worst. He should be fired for the Perez deal. He did make some good one. The Milledge deal was a good one, they got two affordable starters out of it. And Kris Benson for John Maine and Jorge Julio turned into Benson for Maine and El Duque, which is/was outstanding maneuvering.

Oh, you forgot the poor way he handled L-Millz. L-Millz was our best prospect, someone who had actual trade value, but Omar waited until:

1. there was a job available for L-Millz @ Shea
2. L-Millz had his lowest trade value

before he decided to trade him for garbage (Schneider and Church).

Swapping Curch for Frenchy was good - they both stink, but at least Frenchy still has upside.

Some of this is spot on, but is not. Bannister was never going to be anything more than a fringe player and following his "lucky" 2007, he has been pretty bad in a division featuring the light hitting Mariners and As. Trading him for a flamethrower looked good to me at the time.

The original Moises signing wasn't all that bad. He was a killer at the plate, but the limited playing time made the deal a bust. But it was only a waste of $3mil...not the worst thing in the world. If we paid $4mil for him, nobody would have been crying.

But the Schoenweis/Mota/Bell/Oliver moves were all disasters...Schoenweis had been terrible his WHOLE career. Bell had great underlying stats with the Mets, but Omar only looked at ERA even though Bell had K/9 of 10, 8.5 and 8 against BB/9 of 2.2, 2.5, 2.7.

Resigning Castillo and Perez was foolish, although throwing the money at D-Lowe would have been worse.

Omar has made some nice moves - getting Maine for free, getting a lot out of the 2006 bullpen, El Duque, the stealing of Johan, NOT signing Zito, but his inability to develop anything from the minors (other than D-Wright and Reyes, but that was already 5? years ago) is frustrating. F-Mart, Gomez, Dan Murphy, Pelfrey, yuck.

And this year's addition of Redding and Livan - total waste of money. Lima time too, LOL.
