Pedro Beato Demoted to Make Room for Matt Harvey

In a bit of a surprise, the Mets announced on Twitter Monday night that they have optioned Pedro Beato to Buffalo to make room for Matt Harvey.

Poor Pedro Beato
Poor Pedro Beato

Beato was shelled in that horrible tenth inning of the loss to the Nationals, allowing four runs in one-third of an inning. Overall he appeared in seven games and pitched to an ERA of 10.38.

His performance certainly warranted a demotion; what is unexpected is that the Mets decided to continue going with 11 pitchers and an extra bench player. The scuttlebutt before the game was that Lucas Duda would be sent down, a mistake in my opinion.

In any case Beato, who showed such promise early last season before getting injured, is back in Buffalo, and there is no light at the end of the dark bullpen tunnel.
