Please, No: Mets Considering Chris Young
With a hole in the rotation following the trade of R.A. Dickey, the Mets are reportedly considering bringing Chris Young back for a third go-round with the team. Why, exactly?
Young was the definition of mediocre last season, going 4-9 with a 4.15 ERA in 20 starts following shoulder surgery. His fastball could not break a thin pane of glass, and he was unable to pitch more than five innings without faltering.
You’re telling me the Mets can’t find someone better than that? They already have several better options on the roster. Why not just give Jenrry Mejia or Jeurys Familia a shot, to find out once and for all if they are capable? Collin McHugh and Jeremy Hefner are just as good as Young, and they possibly have a higher upside. Or better yet, just let Zack Wheeler start the season in the majors if he has a solid spring training and shows that he’s ready.
Let’s move forward. The same goes for Scott Hairston. He had a fine 2012, but that was the best he will ever be. The Mets won nothing with Young and Hairston as supporting players; time to find new guys.
