Juan Lagares has been named one of three finalists for the Gold Glove in center field in the National League. He is up against the Reds Billy Hamilton and Denard Span of the Nationals.
We have all watched Lagares play center this season, so he is definitely deserving. I’m sure Hamilton and Span are very good, but I cannot imagine they are any better than Lagares.
I thought the main obstacle to Juan Lagares winning the Gold Glove would be Carlos Gomez. He won it last season and for some reason the player with superior offensive numbers often wins (see Chase Headley over David Wright in 2012). But Gomez was not named as a finalist, so he is out of the picture.
Lagares would be just the third Mets outfielder to win a Gold Glove; Tommie Agee in 1970 and Carlos Beltran from 2006-2008.
