Steven Matz to Have Season-Ending Elbow Surgery
The idea that Steven Matz will come back for the stretch run and the possible playoffs is dead. The Mets announced Tuesday he will need elbow season that will end his season.
Matz has been dealing with bone spurs in the elbow for most of the season. However, it was shoulder impingement that landed Matz on the disabled list. The shoulder will not need surgery, so that’s good news.
Matz joins three other members of the Mets dream rotation — Jacob deGrom, Matt Harvey and Zack Wheeler — on the sidelines as the Mets attempt to shockingly make the playoffs without their perceived strength.
Matz last pitched on August 14. He finishes with a record of 9-8 (after starting the season 7-1) with a 3.40 ERA. He threw 132.1 innings in 22 starts.
