Reports: Mets Sign James McCann

Multiple reports Saturday afternoon say the Mets have signed free agent catcher James McCann to a four-year, $40 million contract. This is a great first step.

McCann was an All-Star in 2019, batting .273 with 18 home runs and 60 RBIs — the latter two stats career highs. In the abbreviated 2020 season, he batted .289 with seven home runs. He is a solid backstop and by all accounts is a good guy and even better teammate.

This is a much more prudent signing than J.T. Realmuto, who will likely command at least double the yearly salary than McCann. And Realmuto is coming off a hip injury, raising concerns about how long he will be able to catch regularly.

So now there is plenty of money for George Springer, whom I believe will be the next to come to Flushing. And I’m sure Steve Cohen can search his couch cushions for the extra cash to sign Trevor Bauer, too.
