Mets Re-Sign Devin Mesoraco
The Mets have re-signed catcher Devin Mesoraco to a minor league deal. This has to mean the eventual end to Travis d’Arnaud’s time in Flushing, right?
The Mets acquired Mesoraco last season for Matt Harvey — two players who needed a fresh start. Mesoraco was just adequate — 10 home runs and a .222 batting average. Definitely not enough to be the 2019 starter, but good enough to be the backup.
d’Arnaud will make three and a half million dollar in 2019 to ride the Mets bench. That seems like an awful lot of money that could be better spent elsewhere. Either he gets traded for bullpen depth or the Mets just release him during Spring Training, at which point they will owe him a relatively small severance check.
