Surprise Check on 2017 Mets Payroll

I didn’t think I would be doing another check on the 2017 Mets payroll so soon. But with Monday’s news that Neil Walker took the qualifying offer and Bartolo Colon taking the Braves offer last week, there are major changes to be made from the first estimate. Oh, and I am removing Yoenis Cespedes this time around and adding Lucas Duda, who I thought might have been a non-tender candidate.

Matt Harvey: $6,000,000 (Arbitration estimate)
Jacob deGrom: $5,000,000 (Arb est)
Noah Syndergaard: $600,000 (est)
Steven Matz: $600,000 (est)
Zack Wheeler: $1,000,000 (Arb est)

Jerry Blevins: $6,000,000 (Free Agent estimate)
Addison Reed: $7,000,000 (Arb est)
Jeurys Familia: $7,000,000 (Arb est)
Hansel Robles: $600,000 (est)
Erik Goeddel: $600,000 (est)
Robert Gsellman: $600,000 (est)
Seth Lugo: $600,000 (est)

Travis d’Arnaud: $1,500,000 (Arb est)
Kevin Plawecki: $600,000 (est)

David Wright: $20,000,000 (actual)
Asdrubal Cabrera: $8,250,000 (actual)
Neil Walker: $17,200,000 (actual)
Lucas Duda: $8,000,000 (Arb est)
Jose Reyes: $600,000 (est)
Wilmer Flores: $1,500,000 (Arb est)
Kelly Johnson: $2,500,000 (FA est)

Curtis Granderson: $15,000,000 (actual)
Juan Lagares: $4,500,000 (actual)
Jay Bruce: $13,000,000 (actual)
Michael Conforto: $600,000 (est)

The Mets are on the hook for $77,950,000 in already-committed dollars. The estimate for free agents and arbitration is $45,500,000. And players still under team control will likely make around the minimum, which I put at $600,000. The total for that is $5,400,000. The grand total is $128,850,000, down from $136,800,000 in my initial estimate.

Of course, that initial estimate included Cespedes. So if the Mets sign Cespedes at $25 million, that would put the Mets payroll at about $153 million. I’m guessing the Mets would prefer to be closer to $140 million, so it is likely the Mets will trade either Jay Bruce or Lucas Duda to get that number down. Bruce is more likely to go because he is healthier, makes more money and would likely bring back more in a deal.

Stay tuned.
