R.A. Dickey Named Finalist for Cy Young Award
The Baseball Writers Association of America has named R.A. Dickey as one of the finalists for the Cy Young Award. The good news for Dickey and Mets fans is the player who is not a finalist.
Dickey will compete with Clayton Kershaw and Gio Gonzalez when the award is announced on November 14. I think Dickey will beat both of these guys; I was mainly concerned with Craig Kimbrel, who had an historic year as a closer and whom I thought had the best chance to steal the award from Dickey.
However perhaps Dickey should not clear space off of his shelf for the award just yet; David Wright was snubbed for a much-deserved Gold Glove award last week, fueling speculation that there is an anti-New York bias when it comes to year-end awards. I still think R.A. Dickey will pull this one out.
Incidentally, I don’t remember this “finalists” thing ever happening before. I think this is new. Also new is announcing the awards live on MLB Network at 6pm Eastern every day next week. In previous years the BBWAA just issued a news release at 2pm, handing out its awards over the course of a couple of weeks.
