Mets to Cut Dillon Gee

ESPN New York‘s Adam Rubin reported on Twitter Monday afternoon that the Mets are going to designate Dillon Gee for assignment.

Dillon Gee delivers one of his final Mets pitches Sunday.

Gee seemingly got one more chance in a spot start on Sunday and failed miserably — 3.2 innings, eight runs on 11 hits. Overall Gee was 0-3 with a 5.90 ERA in eight games, including one relief appearance.

Gee has been bounced around since before the season even began. He was slated for the bullpen, then had to fight for his old starting job when Zack Wheeler went down in Spring Training. He made the rotation, but then got injured and lost his spot to Noah Syndergaard. Then the Mets got the bright idea to go to a six-man rotation, forcing Gee to make extra rehab starts in the minors. He made one start before the team ended the experiment and was put in the bullpen. Then came yesterday’s spot start. And now he’s done.

On one hand, Dillon Gee pitched poorly and deserves this fate. However, he was jerked around by the Mets all season. He was never sure of his role. That is not a recipe for success.

When Gee was put back in the bullpen a couple of weeks ago, he worried that any value he might have had was ruined. He was right; the Mets obviously could not trade him and his $5.3 million salary for a bucket of balls.

To make matters worse, his spot on the roster is being taken by Single-A reliever Akeel Morris. Who? Exactly.

It never should have come to this. Sandy Alderson should have traded Gee for anything he could get last winter, knowing full well his glut of starting pitching was going to lead to this exact situation. Yet another player personnel decision handled wisely by the Baseball Maverick.

Someone will likely take a chance on Gee after he clears waivers, and they will get a relatively reliable back of the rotation guy, which he was for the Mets for several seasons. And good news for the stingy Wilpons — they get to pay him to pitch for another team for the rest of the season!
