Steve Cohen Pissed Off About Steven Matz Decision
Steven Matz is going to the Cardinals on a four-year, $44 million contract, and Steve Cohen is pissed off. Here’s what the Mets owner tweeted Wednesday morning:
“I’m not happy this morning . I’ve never seen such unprofessional behavior exhibited by a player’s agent.I guess words and promises don’t matter.”
Apparently, Matz’s agent promised to get back to the Mets to give them a chance to match the offer. And that did not happen, hence Cohen’s outrage.
It says here the Mets dodged a huge bullet by not matching the offer. Matz never lived up to expectations in Flushing, so why in the world would you bring him back? You can get an adequate fourth or fifth starter anywhere, and Matz’s history has shown he is just that.
The fact that the Mets entertained this offer, along with letting Noah Syndergaard and Aaron Loup walk, tells me they plan on shopping in the bargain bin this offseason. I don’t think they have any interest in going over the luxury tax. If I had to guess, that order is coming from Sandy Alderson, whom I believe arrogantly thinks he can win without spending big money. Unfortunately, he does not have the skills to pull that off.
The more things change, the more they stay the same around the Mets.
