Reports: Mets Sign Starling Marte
Well, just moments after I posted a story predicting the Mets would not make any big splashes this offseason, they went ahead and made a big splash. They reportedly will sign Starling Marte to be their center fielder.
The deal is reported to be for four years, $78 million. Marte gives the Mets the stolen base threat they haven’t had in years; he swiped 47 bags this year while batting .310. They also will have a real center fielder for the first time in a long time. Marte has won two Gold Gloves in his career. The only concern is that he turned 33 this offseason (just like the other two Mets acquisitions today). If his legs start to go, it will be a long four years.
So a big night for the Mets.
