Breaking: Ben Zobrist to Sign with Cubs — Whew!

Multiple tweets Tuesday night from the likes of Joel Sherman of the New York Post and Fox Sports midget Ken Rosenthal say Ben Zobrist will sign with the Cubs. This is not terrible news for the Mets.

Terms have not yet been disclosed, but there were reports earlier that Zobrist had an offer of $80 million for four years. That seems awfully high, so it would not be a surprise if the final number comes in closer to $60 million. Either way, that is a lot of money for anyone, let alone the Mets, to spend on a 34-year-old player who will very soon be a utility guy.

I haven’t been this happy with a non-Mets signing since Shin-Soo Choo took his talents to Texas. Remember everyone wanted to sign this sabermetrics darling? How is that working out? It will be the same thing with Ben Zobrist. The Mets are lucky he is going to Chicago; they can spend their money better.

UPDATE:

The contract is four years, $56 million. Still too much!
