Matt Harvey: I’m Open to Long-Term Deal
Matt Harvey arrived at Port St. Lucie on Monday, two days before pitchers and catchers are set to report to Spring Training. And as is his style, he made news, but this time in a good way. He said he would be open to a long-term contract with the Mets.
“I think whatever comes up is going to come up,” Harvey told ESPN. “I think I’ve never shied away from it, I’ve never said I wouldn’t consider it, but I haven’t heard anything considering that.”
This comes as a surprise. It was a given that agent Scott Boras would take Harvey to free agency after the 2018 season, as he does with most of his clients. While Harvey’s comment was less than committal, maybe that will not be the case. Let’s see what Boras has to say.
As far as how he feels following his first year after Tommy John surgery, Harvey said, “My body feels great, my arm feels great.” That’s good to know.
Matt Harvey has a reputation as something of a prima donna, partially brought on by himself. But reporting early and comments like these will go a long way in erasing that image.
