Mets Get Kelly Shoppach
The Mets announced on Twitter Tuesday afternoon that they have acquired catcher Kelly Shoppach from the Red Sox for a player to be named later. Boston had put Shoppach on waivers.
The 32-year-old Shoppach was hitting .250 with five home runs and 17 RBIs in 48 games with the Red Sox this season. He has some pop in his bat — he hit as many as 21 homers in 2008.
Mets Blog reports that Terry Collins said Shoppach will be used primarily against left handed hitting, and that the Mets will use the rest of the season to evaluate whether to re-sign Shoppach for 2013. He is making $1.35 million this year.
The team has not announced a corresponding move, but it is likely that Rob Johnson will be sent down to Buffalo. Shoppach will be activated for Wednesday’s game.
