Terry Collins explained his pitching moves in Wednesday’s loss to the Padres, including taking out starter Robert Gsellman after six innings and just 84 pitches. He wanted Gsellman to leave on a positive note, which would be fine if the bullpen was not so overworked.
If Gsellman were able, he should have pitched the seventh. As it happened, the bullpen coughed up the lead. Oh, and Collins used five relievers in the final three innings, including two pitchers who pitched to one batter each.
