Mets Shut Out Padres Again
For the second straight day the Mets have shut out the Padres, taking three out of four from lowly Dan Siego.
The Mets could thank the combination of pitcher Edinson Volquez and catcher Nick Hundley for their only two runs. In the first David Wright walked and stole second. He advanced to third on a wild pitch by Volquez and later scored on a Daniel Murphy single.
In the fifth Mike Baxter doubled yet again (10 this season) and went to third on a wild pitch. He would score on a passed ball by Hundley.
Meantime R.A. Dickey did almost nothing wrong. He baffled Padres hitters for 7.1 innings, allowing just three hits and striking out 10. He did leave with runners on first and second after hitting a batter and issuing his only walk, but Tim Byrdak came on to get the final two outs to end the threat.
Frank Francisco pitched a one-two-three ninth for his 13th save of the year.
Dickey runs his record to 7-1 as the Mets win their third straight, and are six games over .500 for the first time in two years.
