Jeurys Familia Has Surgery; Could Miss Rest of Season
Jeurys Familia had surgery on a blood clot in his pitching arm and could be done for the season.
Sandy Alderson broke the news late Friday afternoon that Familia had the procedure earlier in the day in St. Louis. Alderson said Familia will miss “several months.” He could not say for sure if Familia would be back at all.
Jeurys Familia, of course, set a team record with 51 saves in 2016, but missed the first 15 games of this season for a domestic violence suspension. He never looked particularly effective, pitching to a 3.86 ERA with three saves and one blown save. He struck out 10 batters in 9.1 innings, but he also walked eight batters. The lack of control was uncharacteristic for Familia.
So in addition to their best starting pitcher and best hitter, the Mets will be without their closer for an extended period of time. This is starting to feel like 2009 all over again.
