Game Recaps

Phillies Spank the Mets Again

I did my best to ignore Monday night’s 10-0 drubbing of the Mets at the hands of the Phillies. But after a second humiliating loss, this one 9-4, it cannot be ignored any more — the Mets are just pathetic.

Philadelphia took a 9-0 lead Tuesday night as Jonathon Niese served it up to the Phillies, lasting just four innings, allowing eight runs on ten hits. The Mets managed to score four meaningless runs in the later innings, highlighted my a mammoth two-run homer by Lucas Duda. Duda is playing his way into the starting right fielder’s job for 2012.

But it doesn’t matter who is in the Mets lineup when the pitching is so horrendous. Four of the five Mets starters have ERAs over 4.00. That is unacceptable. You can’t win with such horrendous starting pitching — it’s that simple. The Giants proved last year and continue to prove this season that you can win with excellent pitching and average hitting. It doesn’t work the other way.

The Mets and Phils play a matinee on Wednesday as the Mets attempt to salvage the final game of the series and break a five game losing streak. Pathetic.
