Pedro Beato Sent to Boston for Kelly Shoppach

The Mets announced on Twitter Thursday that they have completed the Kelly Shoppach trade by sending Pedro Beato to Boston. This comes as something of a surprise to me.

Beato got off to a very solid start in 2010, not allowing an earned run over the first month of the season. But then he got injured, and when he came back he was never the same. Still though, the Mets must have seen something in him because as a Rule 5 guy, they had to keep him on the big league roster all season or they would have risked losing him. The Mets chose to keep him around.

He got hurt in spring training and when he was ready to come back in May, Beato was sent to Buffalo despite the Mets bullpen problems. He was finally brought up in July and posted a 10.38 ERA in seven appearances before being sent back down.

Obviously he did not get the job done, but it appears the Mets soured on Beato relatively quickly. After using a roster spot on him all last season and refusing to lose him, now he is gone for a backup catcher. I wonder if they know something we don’t.
