Zack Wheeler Has Rehab Setback
Bad news on the rehab front — Zack Wheeler is experiencing an elbow issue and will fly to New York to be examined by the Mets crack medical staff at the Hospital for Special Surgery.
“All I can say is he’s had a little bit of elbow discomfort,” Sandy Alderson said. “He hasn’t thrown in a couple of days.”
Wheeler was supposed to throw a minor league inning this week in his first game action since Tommy John surgery; of course, that will not happen now. And this will likely delay his return to the majors, which was expected around the All-Star break.
Doctors had to go back into the elbow in April to deal with a stitch that did not dissolve.
Mets fans can’t wait until they see all five of their young starters in the same rotation. This is starting to feel like Generation K, when one of the trio was always injured and they never pitched together. Let’s hope this is just another minor blip for Zack Wheeler and he will come back sometime this summer.
