R.A. Dickey Can’t Win 19th, Phillies Beat Mets
R.A. Dickey failed once again to win his 19th game as Cliff Lee and the Phillies got the better of him Monday night.
The Phillies scored an unearned run in the first. Leadoff batter Jimmy Rollins struck out, but the third strike got past Mike Nickeas, and Rollins was safe at first on the passed ball. He advanced to second on a wild pickoff throw by Dickey. He moved to third on a ground out and scored on a short sacrifice fly to center.
Rollins made it 2-0 in the fifth with a solo home run. It was originally ruled a triple but a video review clearly showed that it went over the fence.
The Mets got one of the runs back in the bottom of the inning. Nickeas led off with a bunt single. Dickey sacrificed him to second. He moved to third on a ground out and Daniel Murphy came through with a single to score Nickeas to make it 2-1.
Dominic Brown led off the seventh with a home run over the wall in right to make it 3-1.
Dickey went seven innings, allowing three runs (two earned), striking out eight. Dickey now has 205 strikeouts on the season, trailing Clayton Kershaw, who may miss the rest of the season, by just one. His league-leading ERA fell a bit to 2.67. His 18-6 record trails Gio Gonzalez’s 19-8 record.
Lee was just too good, going eight innings, striking out 10 Mets.
Mets lose 3-1.
